If you plan to drive in a foreign country with your US-issued driver’s license, you will need an Apostille for your driver’s license (DL) to be considered legal abroad. Multichoice Apostille can help you with obtaining an Apostille on your DL.

First, you should have a copy of your driver’s license certified by a Public Notary in the state that issued your driver’s license. Make sure you use a licensed Public Notary with experience in document certification for use abroad.  Generally, a color copy of your license with the attached notary affidavit should be sufficient. Please ensure that a notarized copy of your license bears the notary’s name, date of notarization, and notary seal.

If you left the United States already, your family member or another trusted person can obtain a notarized copy of your driver’s license on your behalf. For example, if you are in Italy, and your driver’s license was issued in the State of Georgia, you can ask your family member or another person you trust who is located in Georgia to take your driver’s license to a Notary Public in Georgia, have it copy certified, notarized, and mailed it to our office for further apostille processing. Please remember that the Notary Public will need to see an original driver’s license to perform certification.  A color copy of the driver’s license can only be signed and notarized in the State that issued the document. Once you receive a notarized copy of your driver’s license, please mail it to our office for apostille processing.

Don’t worry if you are already abroad and don’t have anyone who could obtain a notarized copy of your driver’s license. You can mail to our office your original driver’s license and we take care of an apostille for it.

Remember that an apostille can only be issued on driver’s licenses intended for use in countries- members of the Hague Apostille Convention. If you need to use your driver’s license in a country that is not a member of the Hague Apostille Treaty, your DL should go through a different legalization process. In this case, your driver’s license will require a certificate of authentication – legalization through the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C., and legalization through the Embassy / Consulate office.

Obtaining an apostille on a driver’s license is a complicated process and should be done by professionals only. Remember that trusting your important documents to incompetent people unfamiliar with the specifics of each country, may lead you to unplanned expenses, and delays of your important business by weeks, or even months. Complex matters must be handled by experts, and that’s why we recommend that you should trust Multichoice Apostille to take care of obtaining your driver’s license apostille.

Don’t worry if you are already outside of the United States. You can send to our office your original driver’s license and we can obtain an Apostille on it.
