What is an Apostille?

An apostille is a special certificate utilized to authenticate documents for use in member countries of the Hague Apostille Convention of 1961. An apostille serves as a formal validation of a notarized document issued abroad to be recognized as credible in another country. An apostille is a separate page attached to your original document to certify its authenticity. An apostille is issued by the Secretary of State office in the same state that issued a document.

In the United States, all 50 states and the Federal Government (US Department of State – Office of Authentication) can issue an apostille.

The Hague Apostille Convention was founded to simplify the legalization process of documents for common use among the convention participants. Currently, the Hague Apostille Convention has 117 member countries. An apostille issued by a competent authority in a member-country of the Hague Convention certifies that a document is legal and valid for use in other countries – parties to the Hague Convention.  You will need to contact a competent authority in your country to authenticate your public document.  For example, if your document requires notarization (ex. Power of Attorney), then the apostille will authenticate the Notary’s seal and signature.  The Notary public in this case is considered as a competent public authority. The County Clerk or the State Registrar will be. the competent authority to authenticate vital records (including birth certificate, death certificate, marriage certificate, divorce decree, etc.).
