Social Security Administration (SSA) regularly sends income and benefits letters to U.S. Citizens. However, if you divide your career between the United States and another country, have business with projects or offices in another country, or just wish to spend your retirement years abroad, you will be required to get your Social Security certificate apostilled to validate it for international use. Your first step should be requesting a copy of your Social Security Letter directly at the local SSA office, or the SSA website www.ssa.gov.
Depending on your particular circumstances, you will either need to request an SSA Benefits Letter from the Social Security Administration office, or a Certificate of Coverage. SSA Benefits Letter is also often called a Proof of Income Letter. It is a document confirming that its holder receives social security benefits or Medicare. SSA benefits letter is generally requested by foreign Consulates to issue long-term visas/residency permits to applicants who wish to move to another country and continue receiving US social security benefits.
Certificate of Coverage is needed if its holder divides his/her work between the United States and another country. You may be asked for a Certificate of Coverage to avoid paying double Social Security taxes if you are an employee of a U.S. company or corporation that manages or supervises operations overseas.
Sometimes people request apostilled Social Security Letters after they already departed from the United States. Even if you are abroad already, you can still mail your SSA letter to our office and we can obtain an apostille on it.
Multichoice Apostille can obtain apostille for official letters issued by the U.S. Social Security Administration. Documents issued by the Social Security Administration are federal documents and must always bear the federal stamp/ signature. If a country requesting your Social Security Letter is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, we will process an apostille on your document. If you need to use your SSA Letter in a country – non-member of the Hague Apostille Convention your Social Security Letter will require a different authentication process through the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C., and legalization through the Embassy / Consulate office.
